Are you setting your students up for success?

Jasmine, are you really setting your students up for success with this lesson plan? Can you do something else to ensure they learn and can bring home what they learn?I remember my Institute Specialist (IS) during my Teach For Malaysia training asking me that question. Jillian my IS would always ask me that at the end of every lesson plan review. Sometimes the answer comes faster but sometime I would have to ponder if I am really setting my students up for success. What I've learnt over the past…See More

A new house, a new year, a new post.

I’m sitting in my new house (the owner of the old one got married, never mind, long story) surrounded by a ton of thick cartons, all of which lie unpacked - cello-tape shining on all of them. There are suitcases of different sizes lying around, a couple of bags are on top of a stool, the TV is upside down, and I don’t have a fan. I didn’t even have electricity or water until about an hour back, but the watchman + electrician + plumber helped me fix it. He was working on the light in the hall,…See More

My classroom vision

As year 2 of the Fellowship ends, I want to post work that I am most proud of myself doing. One of those is a vision that I developed for my classroom after coming back from the Synergies Workshop in Chicago last year. Going back in the classroom I felt that I did not know my students enough and what I wanted for them was just very shallow. Brutally challenged the assumptions, vision and goals I had set for myself and my students in one year and what came out of the painful process was clarity…See More

Student exchange Hamburg - UK

Hi everybody,I'm currently working in a Hamburg secondary school and I want to establish a student exchange with a school in the United Kingdom next winter (2013/2014). My students participating in the exchange will be in 10th grade (16 - 17 years old). They're participating in a course called Experience abroad where we are trying to broaden their intercultural understanding and communication skills. I am now looking for a partner school to do the exchange with. For the moment I don't think…See More

On Completing an Year at Teach For India!

On Finishing the First Year! ;) Time has passed and here I am today, writing here after about one year! So much has happened since I wrote last. My kids are now in Grade 5 (I think this sums up everything!). Suddenly they seem to have grown up so much! Its been 20 days since I saw them. They are on a break!! Long summer break! And I am on a break too! But today, I am missing them very much! One year for me, to be honest to myself, has not been a roller coaster ride. I have seen downfalls in…See More

How can we get Primary and Secondary teachers working together for the benefit of their pupils?

I'm working at Teach First (UK) and am really keen to help our Primary and Secondary teachers work more closely together for the benefit of their pupils. I think we're missing a trick when we have excellent teachers in both phases who don't always collaborate! Primary teachers are highly skilled at breaking down core concepts and teaching basic Literacy and Numeracy, as well as having experience of teaching a broad range of subjects. They also get the opportunity to spend lots of time with one…See More
